What is deep drawing and what possibilities does TOS offer?

Deep drawing is a forming technique in which a flat metal sheet is drawn in a die to create a three-dimensional shape. The process is often used for thin-walled, hollow products such as cups, casings, technical housings, and components for automotive, electronics, and mechanical engineering.

The major advantage of deep drawing is that products are seamless and strong, without welds or weak points. This results in high dimensional stability, even with thin walls. Thanks to modern molds, complex geometries can also be produced with tight tolerances.

At TOS , we guide customers in optimizing their designs for the deep drawing process (Design for Manufacturing). After forming, parts can be further refined with CNC machining processes such as drilling, milling, or tapping. For protection and appearance, we offer various surface treatments such as anodizing , powder coating , e-coating , or galvanizing .

We deliver complete solutions: from simple prototypes to large-scale series production. With TOS, you choose a reliable partner that combines quality , speed, and efficiency.

Materials and alloys for deep drawing

Deep drawing is often used with steel and stainless steel due to their strength and durability. Stainless steel is also corrosion-resistant and widely used in the food, chemical, and medical industries. Aluminum is a popular alternative when low weight and good formability are important. Copper and brass can also be used for decorative or technical products.

At TOS, we recommend the most suitable material for each project, tailored to product properties, machinability, and desired surface finish.

Material Properties Strength Corrosion resistance Applications
Steel
High strength, wear resistant
High
Moderate – depending on finish
Automotive, mechanical engineering, constructions
RVS (304/316)
Corrosion resistant, hygienic
High
Food industry, chemical, medical sector
Food, maritime
Aluminium
Lightweight, highly malleable
Medium – good
Good, but less than stainless steel
Transport, electronics, housings
Copper/Brass
Good against corrosion, less wear resistant
Middle
Good against corrosion, less wear resistant

Advantages and Disadvantages of Deep Drawing

How we work on a Deep Drawing project

At TOS, we guide you from concept to finished product when it comes to deep drawing metal . This process is ideal for producing complex, seamless shapes with high dimensional accuracy and excellent repeatability. Thanks to our experience and reliable partners in Europe and Asia, you can count on an efficient approach, short lead times, and consistent quality. Below, you can read our 10-step process.

We start with a comprehensive intake interview , discussing the application, volumes, budget, and delivery times. This gives us a complete picture of your needs and the functional requirements of the product to be deep-drawn.

Our engineers analyze the design and provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) advice. This includes considerations such as wall thickness, draw ratios, and draft angles. We also advise on the most suitable alloy (steel, aluminum, or stainless steel) to ensure the product is technically and economically optimized .

Based on your design and volumes, you’ll receive a transparent quote. This quote clearly details mold costs and unit prices. You’ll also receive an estimated delivery time and a clear schedule , so you know exactly what to expect in advance.

A high-quality die is the key to successful deep drawing. Our specialists develop and produce the drawing die, taking into account tolerances, material behavior, and production stability. This forms the basis for consistent series production. Often before the deep drawing dies are started, we print 3D models and offer them for inspection.

Before we start series production, a First Article Inspection (FAI) is performed. This involves producing the first deep-drawn parts, which are carefully assessed for dimensions, surface quality, and material performance. Any improvements are addressed immediately.

After the trial run, we finalize the specifications. This “design freeze” ensures that series production runs predictably, efficiently, and without surprises.
The parts are produced according to the drawing and agreed-upon tolerances. Thanks to deep drawing, each series is consistent in quality and suitable for applications in sectors such as automotive, electronics, mechanical engineering, and consumer products.

If desired, we perform additional CNC post-processing , such as milling, drilling, or tapping. We can also apply surface treatments such as anodizing , chrome plating , powder coating, e-coating , or galvanizing to our products for protection or an aesthetic finish.

All products are thoroughly inspected according to international quality standards . We provide measurement reports, material certificates, and additional documentation upon request. This ensures transparency and traceability.

Finally, we can assemble components into semi-finished products or modules, package them according to customer specifications, and prepare them for export. We also handle logistics , inventory management, and delivery, so you have a single point of contact for the entire process.

FAQ's

What is deep drawing?
Deep drawing is a metalworking process in which a flat sheet is formed into a three-dimensional, seamless shape using a die and pressing force. This process allows for the production of complex, deep shapes without welds or joints. Thanks to its high dimensional accuracy and reproducibility, deep drawing is ideal for series production. At TOS, we apply this process to a wide range of sectors where precision and reliability are essential.
At TOS, we work with various metals suitable for deep drawing, such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper alloys. Each material has specific properties: steel is strong and cost-effective, stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance, aluminum is lightweight and easily formable, and copper alloys are ideal for applications where conductivity is important. We always advise our customers on the right alloy, tailored to the technical requirements and the product’s application.
Deep drawing is widely used in the production of parts that must be seamless, thin-walled, and yet strong. Examples include cups, sleeves, housings, engine parts, sensor covers, and technical components in the automotive, electronics, and mechanical engineering sectors. The versatility of the process allows for the creation of both simple shapes and highly complex designs, making deep drawing a versatile production technique.
After deep drawing, components can be further processed to meet all functional and aesthetic requirements. This includes CNC post-processing such as milling, drilling, or tapping to add additional features. Surface treatments are also possible, including anodizing (for aluminum), powder coating (for protection and color), and galvanizing (for wear resistance and corrosion protection). In this way, we deliver not just a basic component but a complete finished product that is immediately ready for use.

At TOS, we manage the entire deep drawing process: from engineering and mold development to production, post-processing, surface treatment, and logistics. This means you have a single point of contact for the entire process, keeping communication simple and efficient. We collaborate with reliable production partners and apply strict quality controls, ensuring consistent quality and competitive prices. Thanks to our experience and broad expertise, we can accelerate your product development and reduce total production costs.
